Brad Young Needs Competition, But He Isn't Rovers' Only Problem
Steve Evans has admitted that Bristol Rovers are looking at bringing in competition for Brad Young, with January appearing the more likely opportunity to find the right goalkeeper.
And frankly, it is difficult to argue with that decision.
Young was impressive last season and deserved his new contract, but this campaign has been a different story. Evans himself admits the 24 year old has not reached the same heights, and the statistics make uncomfortable reading, with 20 league goals conceded so far.

However, Evans also insists that most of those goals have come from poor defending in front of his goalkeeper. Having watched Rovers struggle defensively, it is difficult to disagree entirely. The problem is that this cannot become another exercise in looking for individuals to blame while the bigger picture is ignored.
Rovers have lost four consecutive league games and seven of their last eight matches in all competitions. The defeat to Salford City on Tuesday was another reminder that this team has serious issues to address.
Young needs competition. Every goalkeeper should have to fight for their place, and having a more experienced alternative could benefit both the player and the team.
But bringing in another goalkeeper will not suddenly solve the defensive mistakes, lack of consistency and worrying performances that have contributed to Rovers' current situation.
Evans has a decision to make, and January cannot come soon enough for a squad that needs strengthening. But goalkeeper recruitment should be just one part of that process.
Brad Young may need help, but he cannot be expected to solve Rovers' problems on his own.
The Gas need more than a new face between the posts. They need a defence that can be trusted, and performances that give supporters something to believe in again.
